lyrics
I laughed out a story a long time ago,
it was a funny little story about a guy I know.
It entails a substitution that was made a few years in the past.
People - they laughed - as they spat in my face,
but I laughed harder, must have thought me insane.
'Cause I knew the pain I experienced would never last.
Adios to dignity, and goodbye to pride.
I'll always have them by my side.
I laugh when they say, "It don't make me smile."
'Cause I'm freely singing all the while,
"I'm dead, but alive. I'm a sinning man."
But I don't care, I laugh 'cause I can.
Many years ago I kept your heart,
it was wrapped in bubble wrap but it became hard.
I'll keep on laughing.
C'est la vie!
I saw the white van drive up to the home,
and two big white men with two big white coats
put the man in the car, and for what?
I ain't so sure.
The man stepped out in the pouring rain.
His smile said to me that he wasn't insane.
He was laughing but that's because the pain wouldn't happen no more.
I've got a weapon in this section of my soul:
It's my pride and joy, and it will not be controlled!
I laugh when they say, "It don't make me smile."
'Cause I'm freely singing all the while,
"I'm dead, but alive. I'm a sinning man."
But I don't care, I laugh 'cause I can.
Many years ago I kept your heart,
it was wrapped in bubble wrap but it became hard.
I'll keep on laughing.
C'est la vie!
(Swing it.)
They've taken me away to a white room now -
I'm treated like a basket case. I don't know how,
I got here in the first place.
But one thing's for sure.
There's no hope for me, but all is not lost.
I'm happy as can be in my final hours.
Soon there'll be no more pain,
I gotta endure.
